4:31 am
stopped just before the gate to let them out. then they boarded a bus and onto the hotel. the girls were sitting on the back at asiana airlines flight 214 when it clipped the seawall on saturday and crash landed. both of the girls died. one of them may have been hit by an airport fire rig outside of the plane. again, another layer of this complex investigation. here is what one passenger on the family's flight told us about their arrival in to san francisco. >> rather than let everyone off the plane as they would normally
4:32 am
do, they said that they were letting off a few different people earlier. so everyone stayed on the plane for a few extra minutes, and a few people got off on some stairway or ladder or something. i didn't really know what was going on at the time. i was just kind of chilling, i guess they were related to the people who died in the plane crash. >> today family members are expected to meet with the san mateo county coroner who says he wants to wait to report on the causes of the girls' deaths until a full investigation is complete. that could possibly take two to three weeks to know if indeed one of the girls was hit by an emergency fire rig at the airport that day. initially that information was expected to come much sooner. reporting live in burlingame, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. as we talked about, the president of asiana airlines is already on his way to the bay
4:33 am
area to meet with the families of those students. he's scheduled to land at sfo at about noon. yesterday as we showed you at the top of the show, he apologized personally to the father of one of the girl's in saturday's crash. as expected, the father very upset. you can see his anger as he spoke. just before boarding a plane in seoul, he told the media he will make a sincere apology to passengers when he arrives and visits the people still in the hospital. he says it's still too early to say if the crash was caused by pilot error. >> he's planning to meet with the ntsb to get an update. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell live in burlingame with more on what we're learning this morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura and jon. i spoke with the ntsb who confirmed that they did interview two of the four pilots on asiana flight 214. those interviews having taken place yesterday. the safety agency wouldn't
4:34 am
elaborate on what they learned. you might recall the captain was in training, having never landed a 777 here at sfo leading to questions like why didn't his copilot who was experienced in this aircraft take over? why did it take so long for anyone to realize the plane was coming in too low and too slow for the final approach saturday morning. about 1:12 before impact, auto pilot was disengaged. 34 seconds later the pilot was at 500 feet at 134 knots. that number is crucial because anything below 137 knots is below the minimum required for a safe landing. at this point it takes another 28 seconds before the crew tries to correct. at eight seconds out before impact, they're at 112 knots, 125 feet, the slowest speed they ever were at was 108 knots.
4:35 am
again, that's well below the 137 knot minimum threshold required for a safe landing. investigators are hoping their interviews with the pilot will give them a better sense of exactly what was going on in that cockpit. >> whether they were hand flying the airplane, whether the auto pilot was on, what kind of reliance they might have had on automation within the cockpit and how well they understood the automation and what it was supposed to do. >> reporter: ntsb telling me moments ago they will be interviewing the other two pilots today. that's why they scheduled this news conference for later in the afternoon as opposed to the morning to give them time to digest that information and pass some of that information along to us. >> reporting live in burlingame across from sfo, bob redell, "today in the bay." brace yourselves. flights in and out of san francisco international will be experiencing delays for the foreseeable future. the nts says it won't clear the

wreckage from the airport's runway until its team has completed the investigation into this deadly crash. three of the runways at the airport do remain open this morning. this was the very same situation yesterday and could cause delays longer than one hour. 84 flights were actually canceled. we're in contact with sfo right now and will be getting you flight updates as soon as we can get them. make sure to stay here with nbc bay area all morning long. will have updates from the hotel in burlingame where those families of some of the people on asiana flight 214 are now staying. we'll have the latest word on the investigation from the ntsb. you can get the latest details on our website at nbcbayarea.com. we're also learning about a boeing 777 flight that was supposed to land at sfo late yesterday. instead it was diverted hours after takeoff because of a technical problem. the crew on the japanese airlines plane discovered a leak in the hydraulic system that
4:37 am
controls the plane's flaps about three hours into yesterday's flight. the plane returned to tokyo airport without incident. all 236 people on board are okay. moving to other news this morning, the three cleveland women who were kidnapped, ism prisoned and tortured for more than a decade are speaking out for the first time since their dramatic rescue. >> i may have been through hell and back, but am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face. and with my head held high. >> everyone who has been there to support us, it's been a blessing to have an outpouring of love and kindness. >> i would say thank you for the support. >> michelle knight, amanda berry and gina dejesus putting on strong faces here showing their intestinal fortitude, posting this video on youtube thanking everybody for support since being freed from ariel castro's house back in may. castro has pleaded not guilty.
